Meetings are held at on the 1st Thursday after the 2nd Monday each month. 6:00 P.M. gathering, fellowship & dinner. 8×10 print competition starts at 6:30 P.M. Programs 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. (must be a member to participate in print competition)

Visitors welcome! October meeting will be held at the Golden Corral 6612 Clinton Highway, Knoxville, TN 37912

October 13th’s meeting’s speaker is Rick Massarini. Here are the details:

Light is Light

Light. Light is the brush that the photographic artist uses to paint his images. Above all, the effective utilization of light is the essential aspect of our profession. Unfortunately, many photographers fall into a rut and tend to use the same lighting technique on every subject they photograph. Rick will attempt to break you out of your rut. The choice of light modifiers is the same as the artist’s choice of brushes, and will dictate the final “look” of the image created. Just as an artist uses different brushes for different visual effects, we must do the same, the only difference is that light is our paint, and we must know which brush to use for which effect. Spend an evening taking a serious look at the brushes that we have at our disposal – a look at light and its characteristics, light modifiers, what we use, why we use them, the reasoning behind deciding which to use, and how to get the most out of whatever we choose to use. The thought process behind deciding which modifier to use is integral to obtaining the final desired result. Just as the artist does not always use conventional brushes to create a piece of art, the use of inexpensive improvised lighting options will also be discussed. The basics of portrait lighting will be covered including a look at optimizing exposure and maximizing range, effective posing, corrective posing, lighting patterns and techniques, and the use of your light and light modifiers to optimize the image you produce for your client. The use of Umbrellas, Light Boxes, Diffusion panels, parabolic reflectors and improvised lighting modifiers will be discussed. Rick will also show you the most convenient to use studio reflector that you will ever see, and will show you how to build one of your own. If time allows, Rick will also present a short program on Print Competition and the twelve elements that are involved in creating a successful image.

This was the first time in TNPPA history that one photographer won all three awards. McLemore received the Photographer of the Year Award (for the top average score), the Presidential Award (for the highest scoring print), and the Stan Baker First Time Award (for the top average score for a first timer). McLemore also won eight additional awards at the competition, including the prestigious Kodak Gallery Award.

“Occasionally someone just appears in our association whose talent and personality just take us by surprise,” noted Dwight Jewell, TNPPA executive director. ”This year, Colby McLemore burst on the scene in print competition, with amazingly fresh and beautiful images.” TNPPA, established in 1960, is one of the state’s leading professional organizations for professional photographers.

“I’ve been workign hard to hone my craft over the years,” McLemore said, “but I was totally blown away at the awards banquet.” The subjects of McLemore’s winning prints included portraits, commercial work, and architectural photography.

Bolstered by his wins, McLemore next plans to enter his prints in teh Southeastern Professional Photographers Association district photo competition to be held in Athens, Ga., in March. Following that, he will enter them in the International Photographic Competition of the Professional Photographers of Amercia (PPA) in June.

McLemore is a professional photographer whose work includes commercial assignments as well as portraits and weddings. He is also an instructor for the University of Tennessee Photography Certificate Program, where he teaches classes on architectural photography, food photography, photo retouching, and other subjects. In September, McLemore will go on a statewide tour giving photography presentations to professional photography guilds associated with PPA. He also hold various photographic workshops throughout the region.

BEYOND AND BACK!

A question often heard from your clients is, “What backgrounds do you have?” The first part of this two part program will teach you how to channel your creative energy into custom backgrounds that express your own signature style! You don’t have to be an artist to create beautiful backgrounds. Trisha will teach you all the tips and tricks to painting on canvas or muslin, plus some awesome ways to paint floors and walls. Trisha’s portion of the program will take you “BEYOND” what you have thought was possible in your creative endeavors.

The second part of this program will take you “BACK” to the basics of what makes a good portrait. We LOVE Photoshop, but don’t love to use it to create the lighting, posing and photographic techniques that are required for classic portraiture. It is essential that we capture a superior image in the camera! Kristen will talk about how to consistently achieve beautiful portrait lighting and posing on individuals, couples and families. A solid understanding of the basics gives you the freedom to repeatedly create dynamic portraits that appeal to today’s client.

Their knowledge and expertise will make this a program that you will want to be sure to attend. And most of all, prepare to have fun!

Kristen and Trisha are sisters, and are 2nd generation photographers. Together, they successfully run the studio that their parents, Dale & Janice Holladay established over 37 years ago in a small, rural community in Southeastern Arizona. These girls gained a love for photography at a young age, working in the studio and attending conventions with their parents. Because of their expertise, they have each taught classes in photography and Photoshop at their local community college

Kristen took her first Senior Portrait at the age of 16. Her father asked a Senior client if it would be okay for Kristen to take a few extra poses of him. The client agreed and, of course, his favorite pose was one that Kristen had taken! She is extremely well versed in the use of Photoshop and digital photography. In her first 3 PPA print case entries, she earned 7 print merits with two prints going into the prestigious PPA Loan Collection. She has received the Arizona APPLE award (equivalent to the PPA Master’s Degree) and also Arizona’s Artisan award (PPA’s Craftsmen Degree equivalent) and has received the Kodak Gallery Award and the Fuji Masterpiece Award. She has served as President of Arizona PPA (the youngest person to do so), and is presently serving a 3 year term as PPA councilor for Arizona.

Trisha also began photographing in her teenage years. In her first photographic print competition at the age of 19, she received a Fuji Masterpiece award in state competition and went on to receive a PPA print merit on a B/W photograph that she printed in the studio darkroom using Liquid Light and fabric. Trisha is not only an excellent photographer, but also an accomplished artist. She has worked with oils but finds watercolor to be her greatest love and forte. She has received numerous awards and recognitions in art shows. Her natural artistic eye has proven invaluable in her ability to produce advertising materials and web layouts for the studio. For the last few years Trisha has used her artistic talent to paint custom backgrounds and amazing floors and walls in the studio and has developed her own successful techniques.

Please join us Thursday July 14th for the first half of our meeting while we are shown how to paint our own backgrounds! This part of the meeting will be held at Michael Broyles studio d106, 12748 Kingston Pike Knoxville, TN 37934. The second half will be at Mandarin house at 6pm for dinner and the print competition at 6:30 and program at 7! Be there!

Why is the industry is quickly moving to this software, an in-depth review of the basics and how you can adopt it into your business quickly and easily?

If you went to the TNPPA convention this year, you heard the speakers enthusiasm for this revolutionary software.

Quickly more and more photographers, professional as well as enthusiasts are seeing the light, Lightroom that is. Adobe’s newest kid on the block is taking a larger and larger market share as photographers are learning that they can do most of their organizing, editing, and even output their images in a small fraction of the time that it would take in Photoshop. We’re talking about speed and batching made easy. If you are like me, time is money and as soon as I can put one job to bed the quicker I can work on getting the next one. Sounds intimidating to learn another program? That is the great part! Lightroom’s designed to be intuitive and easy to learn to learn.

Colby McLemore is an ACE (Adobe Certified Expert), teaches classes at the University of Tennessee and offers various workshops throughout the region. He has received great feedback from some people that you might know:

Lynn Austin – “Colby Mclemore is one of the best instructors that I’ve had in 20+ year of photography. I love his sense of humor.”

Ray Holaway – “Great enthusiasm, in-depth practical knowledge and great teaching skills = very useful course..”

Paul Schubert – “Very useful, no fluff. What works and why.”

He is very proud that his last Lightroom class evaluation received over 40% Far Exceeds Expectations, the highest possible rating from his students.

Also, please note:

UT Gardens Professional Photography Policy

March 2011

The UT Gardens in Knoxville are proud to provide an attractive venue and colorful setting that has become a popular location for all types of photography in the East Tennessee region. Considerable materials and labor are required to maintain the Gardens to the high standard that has attracted so many professional photographers to use the Garden’s in their work.

As a result, starting March 1, 2011, the UT Gardens will implement the following Professional Photography policy. ‘Professional Photographer’s being defined as one who charge a fee for their services.’

Professional photographers who wish to take advantage of the UT Gardens’ as part of their commercial work are asked to become Friends of the UT Gardens at the $100 level or above. These funds will directly support the maintenance and upkeep of the UT Gardens. Membership information is available at http://utgardens.tennessee.edu/membership.html.

Photographers who do not wish to become Friends of the UT Gardens at this level may schedule photo shoots on the grounds for a fee of $35 per hour. Non-member (commercial) photographers who bring clients to the UT Gardens without scheduling in advance, or without paying the sitting fee, may be asked to leave the grounds.

All professional photography session at the UT Gardens shall be scheduled no less than 48 hours in advance of the desired session. UT Gardens reserves the right to deny access to the grounds for photography purposes if a photo shoot conflicts with educational or other events, Advance scheduling is for everyone’s safety, helps prevent more than one group attempting to use an area at the same time, and allows staff to schedule irrigation times so that they don’t conflict with photography appointments. Please contact Emily Smith to schedule appointments at esmith27@utk.edu or 865-974-7151.

Photographers working with brides, bridal parties, and other guests who rent the UT Gardens for a function may coordinate a photo shoot with the renters, if desired, in advance of the event. Renters of the UT Gardens may use the photographer of their choice for the duration of the rental period specified in their rental contract.

Both photographers and subjects must stay on walkways or on grass at all times. Please do not pose, walk on, or cut through our planting beds. This includes any area covered with pine straw, even if no plants are visible at the time. Also, do not step on or move any plant labels. Photographers and subjects are also asked to respect all UT property by not climbing onto fences, trees, or other structures for photo poses or any other reason including the old truck in the power plant garden.

The attention that photographers and their clients bring to the UT Gardens is appreciated. However, substantial funds and efforts are used to ensure that the UT Gardens are an attractive, educational venue for UT faculty and students and the entire community. In order to maintain our standards and provide access to all users, it is crucial that photographers adhere to this policy.
