In this intro to DSLR Video – Zero to 60, we will discuss top rules, considerations, gear, and guidelines that you absolutely must have on lock down before you set foot out the door for your first production.  From camera settings to focal lengths, pre-production to the editing room, this introduction will let you know how ready you are to make the leap into the world of video.

Dave Moore is an award winning commercial photographer as well as videographer, rental studio proprietor, and instructor who’s career in digital manipulation spans back to the late 90′s.  Dave’s unique vision for what is possible both before and after capture has been utilized in campaigns for clients ranging from the rap music industry to cabin rentals.  Dave enjoys talking shop with his students and prefers hands-on learning as well as group interaction when teaching his classes.

The monthly 8×10 competition is starting off this month! Our “Photographer of the Year” is awarded bases on your monthly print votes, and this is the time to start working towards it! So make sure to bring your prints in for submitting. You might be this year’s “Photographer of the Year’!  Studio, Active, and Aspiring members may submit to the competition.  Studio and Active members may vote in the competitions.

PPETN members may bring 8×10 prints to the competition each month. The cost is $3 per print. Points towards our annual “Photographer of the Year” will be awarded once we receive digital versions for submitting on our blog.  Any winning images will be posed on the website with back links to your website.  This will help with your SEO (search engine optimization)!

Meeting Cost (excluding food):

Most photographers who have even a passing interest in their online presence have heard of WordPress, the popular “blog” platform. If you think it’s just a blog, you’re missing out – it would be much more accurate to think of WordPress as a complete solution for your entire website. An increasing number of photographers (as well as many businesses in other industries) are turning to WordPress to be the backbone of their online presence, replacing their current websites with ones that are more secure, easier to manage, and easier to update with new content and features.

During this program, you can learn:

Brian Morrison is the owner of Brian Morrison Photography, located in Glenview, IL, a northern suburb of Chicago. Brian’s primary areas of work includes weddings, events, portraits and commercial. His corporate clients have included numerous Fortune 500 companies across a wide range of industries. Brian’s personal and business philosophy is that every client deserves great light in their photos.

Brian received his bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Chicago. He is a Certified Professional Photographer and currently serves on the executive board of the Professional Photographers Association of Northern Illinois (PPANI). Photo-walk starts at 4pm

All members and/or visitors are welcome to come early around 4 pm to do a photo-walk.  The meeting location is at Calhoun’s in Lenoir City which is on a maria.  So there will be lots of opportunities to photograph the beautiful area with all the boats.  This will also be a great social opportunity to hang out with new and old friends.

Two 8×10 Print Competitions

This month we will be having two competitions.  Our normal one outlined below and additional one limited to images taken on the Crescent Bend model workshop.  This new competition will not count toward the Photographer of the Year so that those who did not attend will not be penalized.

All the active members are very excited and we expect the event to fill up quickly, so sign up right now, don’t wait – I’m not kidding, don’t wait. There be an maximum of 18 participants. RSVPs are required!

The event will be on Thursday, April 12, from 4:00 pm to 7:30 pm.

Reservations will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis to PPETN members through April 6th.  Interested members need to sign the form below and immediately pay $10 for a small meal. We will e-mail you a confirmation.

Non-PPETN members are encouraged to join our organization by clicking here.  Then, after joining and paying your dues for the entire year’s activities, you will then need to come back here and reserve your place as a normal PPETN member.

Non-PPETN members who do not want to join may fill out the form below (do not pay the $10) to be put onto our waiting list. If 18 PPETN members have not signed up by April 6th, then people on the waiting list will be given a chance to join the event at a fee of $45 per person on a first-come first serve basis.

All registrations Non-PPETN or PPETN members ends on April 10th.

All photographers are required to release to the model, the venue and PPETN one to three images for their use (no resale or third party use).  The photographers will be e-mailed releases after PPETN receives the images to be forwarded along to the models & venue.

Yes, it is that time of year again.  This is a fabulous opportunity for fine tuning your photographic skills, a great marketing opportunity (if you win), and can also help your websites search engine ranking (winners will be listing on the website with banklinks).  We will have three professional certified judges that usually are very open with suggestions and thoughts on the submissions.  You may also want to ask them further questions after the judging.

This year’s categories are: ANIMALS (subcategories Pets & Wildlife), COMMERCIAL (subcategories Architectural, Editorial and Industrial), GROUPS (Subcategory Couples), ILLUSTRATIVE (Subcategories Pictorial and Abstract), PORTRAIT (Subcategories Male, Female, and Child), SPORTS, WEDDING (Subcategories Bridal & Event), and ALBUM (Subcategories Open & Wedding)

Fees are $60 for 4 submissions and $85 for 6 submissions and must be submitted as soon as possible but no later than 5:00pm the day of the salon. Late entries make it much more likely for errors to be introduced in the naming and categorization of your entries.

As a professional portrait photographer, you want to Unleash Your Creativity and Learn How to Save Money by Painting Your Own Custom Backgrounds - Back by Popular Demand!  Come join us for an exciting “kick off” to our 2012 PPETN meeting schedule with our Painted Background Workshop!  Have you ever had clients to ask-”What kind of backgrounds do you have?”  Or, have you ever had a session that you needed something color specific, but didn’t have the time or money to order one of the large painted canvases or even computer printed backdrops for your session in time?  Well, now here’s a creative and inexpensive solution-learn how to paint your OWN Custom Backgrounds with PPETN!  Yes,we will show you how!

We hosted Kristen Seale and Trisha Simmons, sisters from Holladays Photography, back in the summer of 2011, and many of you couldn’t make the workshop, but were really intrigued about learning how to make your own custom backgrounds.  So, we decided that our first meeting should be something FUN and that would be creative, interactive, and something that could make you some money, all at the same time!  We will have some drops, paint and brushes, or you can bring some of your own!  Wear something that you won’t mind getting a little paint on, and come join us!

The mini-workshop will meet later that evening at 7:00 pm at Michael Broyles Studio (Broyles Photography-12748 Kingston Pike, Suite D106 in Farragut (865)777-5683) at 7:00PM.  

At this workshop, you will learn how to unleash your creative side and be a true ARTIST with learning how to express your signature style with your ”own” custom-made backgrounds!  You will learn several tips and tricks to painting on canvas or muslin, plus, we will have some stencils to add that added customized touch featuring some of the latest trends in backgrounds today!  You don’t have to be an artist to learn these money saving tips!

The backgrounds will be auctioned off at the end of the workshop, so you could pick up a new background for half the price of the ones in the vendor catalogs and be shooting with it the next day!  See you there!

The ins and outs of print competition 

 Adrian Henson thinks that there is a great photographer in everyone.  Shooting video with your DSLR 

 James Dockery will be covering the basics for shooting video with your DSLR.   We will be talking about optimum camera settings, mechanics of shooting video vs. photo, video equipment needed, video terminology, and briefly discussing video editing.  Because of time restraints, this is an “overview class” that will give you the whole picture to help you decide if you’d like to dive into the exciting world of video!!!

James operates his own business in Charlotte, NC where he is photographer/ filmmaker and also works as a video editor for ESPN.

James has been a photographer for over 30 years and a videographer for over 20 years. He’s “Certified” with PPA and is currently serving as Western NC chairman for PPNC where he is on the Board. He has served as President of Metrolina Photographic Society (Charlotte, NC local affiliate of PPA). He holds a BS degree in Radio and TV Broadcasting.
